Winter might not bring snow to every part of Australia, but it still puts your plumbing to the test. Cold mornings, icy winds, and temperature drops can lead to a range of plumbing issues from burst outdoor pipes to failing hot water systems.

Here’s a practical winter plumbing checklist to help you avoid common problems and keep your home warm, dry, and stress-free.

1. Protect Outdoor Taps & Pipes

Exposed outdoor plumbing is vulnerable to freezing temperatures. When water freezes in a pipe, it expands and that can cause cracks, leaks, or even full bursts.

What to do:

• Fit outdoor taps with insulated covers
• Disconnect garden hoses
• Insulate any exposed pipework (especially if you’re in a colder region)

2. Check Your Hot Water System

There’s nothing worse than losing hot water on a cold morning. If your system is old, underperforming, or making strange noises, winter could push it over the edge.

What to do:

• Test water temperature and pressure
• Listen for banging, popping, or gurgling sounds
• Book a professional inspection if it’s over 8–10 years old

3. Clear Gutters & Downpipes

Blocked gutters and drains can cause overflows and water to back up—potentially flooding areas around your home or damaging roofing.

What to do:

  • Clear leaves and debris from gutters
  • Make sure downpipes flow freely
  • Check for leaks or rusted sections

4. Inspect for Leaks (Inside & Out)

Small leaks often worsen in winter due to contracting pipes and increased use of heaters and hot water.

What to do:

  • Check under sinks, behind toilets, and near appliances
  • Look for water stains on walls or ceilings
  • Keep an eye on water bills for unexplained increases

5. Test Your Heating & Gas Appliances

While not strictly plumbing, many plumbers (including us) also handle gas fitting. Winter is the season for increased heater use, make sure yours is safe and working properly.

What to do:

  • Test gas heating before the cold really hits
  • Ensure flues are clear and unblocked
  • Book a licensed plumber or gas fitter for servicing

 Bonus Tip: Schedule Preventive Maintenance

A quick winter check up from a licensed plumber can save you hundreds, if not thousands in repairs later on. Prevention is always cheaper than emergency callouts!
